submit to the Computers & Writing conference

October 27th, 2009 Comments off

Students,
The 2010 Computers and Writing conference will be May 20-23, 2010, at Purdue University. Anyone in this class probably teaches writing with technology, and that’s the point of the (small, friendly, cheap) conference. You all should submit a proposal. They are due Saturday (Halloween) at midnight.

btw, the grad school offers travel funding if you promise to present at the spring research symposium AND the Graduate Research Network (which faculty member Angela Haas co-directs) also offers travel awards (info available after January, I believe). The reg. fee is high (usually around $125 for grad students) but includes all meals for 4 days. Accommodations include cheap dorm rooms, so the total conference cost may only be about $300 for you, if you carpool. (We’ll try to work out details for this closer to.) You can easily cover that with both of these travel awards.

Section 01 manifesto

September 28th, 2009 Comments off

We decided we wanted our manifesto to be public, for multiple audiences, including the other section of 402, other teachers in the writing program, the WPA, the chair, faculty who are invested in the teaching of writing in multiple classes in the English department, and even the administration of ISU. So we posted it to YouTube (with a brief explanation on the rhetorical situation of the assignment and a link back to this syllabus).

new optional readings for Space week

September 9th, 2009 Comments off

Hey all,

I just posted two sets of readings under the optional portion of the Spaces week. One set of readings are the addenda to the Bemer, Moeller, and Ball article. These documents might help you envision/write both your classroom enthnography assignment and your teaching proposal that’s due at the end of the semester (which we haven’t assigned yet).

The second piece is a movie presentation of Jim Kalmbach, Associate Chair of the dept, talking about the history of the Stevenson 250 writing suite and the lessons we learned as we worked to remodel those rooms over the last year. It’s about 17 minutes long, fyi, but quite enjoyable. Jim’s a hoot to listen to :)

Enjoy,
Cheryl.

No Video Summary for Readings #2

September 2nd, 2009 Comments off

Hey all,

I was sick on Monday and so Section 01 met virtually and we didn’t make a whole-class video for Section 02. Instead, in the ning discussion forum for the week, we posted group precis of each reading as well as some bullet-point summaries of what we thought were the main threads tying the readings together. These posts are all in-line with the rest of the discussion forum (they were at the bottom of page 2 on Monday). Enjoy!

Video Summary uploaded to ning

August 24th, 2009 Comments off

Just wanted to let everyone know that I uploaded Section 01′s video summary of the readings to the same discussion forum (Histories and Backgrounds). It is in line with the rest of the replies. I know some of y’all from Section 02 have already responded in the forum, so just a heads up that you’ll have to keep an eye out for the video post (with an accompanying PPT, in case you have trouble reading the questions in the video).

Clarification on readings-post location

August 21st, 2009 Comments off

All, I’ve gotten a few queries about where, exactly, to post your reading responses. It should be on the ning, in the discussion forum (under the Forums tab at the top). Once there, you should Reply to the initial post I and Joyce have made under Histories & Backgrounds. Those posts include the video intro we promised and a short list of things to think about as you’re reading. Here’s a direct link to the correct page to post on.

Welcome to 402!

August 1st, 2009 Comments off

This is the official class blog/website for English 402 at Illinois State University. This blog covers both sections of the course, team-taught (if virtually) by Dr. Joyce Walker and Dr. Cheryl Ball.

  • Joyce Walker’s class meets Thursdays, 5:30-8:20 in STV 410.
  • Cheryl Ball’s class meets Mondays, 12-2:50 in STV 410/408.

The basics of class information can all be found on this site, with navigation above to the course & faculty description (about), syllabus (i.e., policies), reading schedule, and assignments (most of which will be filled in as the semester proceeds). Although we are teaching from the same syllabus (created just for you!!), each class will be different because of the individuals in it, so please check under the faculty descriptions above for further information about your specific section. Otherwise, we will share this blog space, discussion forums, and course calendar.

See you soon!
Cheryl and Joyce
