description
The New Leadership Board (NLB) is an advisory group of people ages 17-39 who work with the Economic Development Council leadership to establish an additional set of priorities for the economic future of the Bloomington-Normal area. The goal is to create a generational dialogue and provide ongoing input to the area’s business, economic and political leadership regarding these emerging generations’ concerns, bringing a voice to this untapped resource. Split into four half-day sessions, NLB members researched and wrote white papers on the following topics:

  • What is the future of the workplace?
  • Who’s the boss?

“CELJ Subcommittee on E-Journal Guidelines”

committee
Member. (2008-present). Council of Editors of Learned Journals.

  • Also: Member (2008). Subcommittee on E-Journal Guidelines.

description
This subcommittee of the CELJ was tasked with writing a set of guidelines on best practices for electronic journal editors. I was one of three e-journal editors (of 12 editors) who served. I participated heavily in the writing and revision of the document, including changing early versions that addressed multiple audiences with incorrect information (i.e., trying to appeal to authors and administrators through an historical overview of the move from print to digital publishing; suggesting that publishing online was “quicker and cheaper” than print, which is not usually true, etc.). The sections that I worked on most closely include “Mission Statement, Submission Guidelines, and Timely Review,” “Style,” “Web Design,” “Accessibility,” “Availability,” and the reference list.

“CCCC Committee for Computers in Composition & Communication”

committee
Conference on College Composition and Communication Committee for Computers in Composition & Communication (7Cs)

description
Since 1949, the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) has been the world’s largest professional organization for researching and teaching composition, from writing to new media. The 7Cs Committee is appointed by the Executive Committee of the CCCC. 7Cs supports composition teachers and scholars (and those in related fields) who work with digital technology. The committee is responsible for selecting the onsite and online hosts for the annual Computers and Writing conferences as well as for organizing the Computer Connection presentations at the annual CCCC conference (attendance ~4,000). 7Cs is also responsible for coordinating the Technology Innovator Award, which is presented annually at the C&W onsite conference. This committee of nine voting members works closely with its associated Task Force, which is comprised of any constituents interested in promoting digital technology issues. As of November 2008 (when I wrote my penultimate report as chair), some current 7Cs projects include the annual Computer Connection at CCCC and collaborating with related committees to promote digital scholarship in relation to tenure issues. During my co-chairship (with Michael Day at Northern Illinois University), the 7Cs committee was commended by the Chair of CCCC for its prodigious work achieved through online communication technologies.

status (all appointed)

  • Chair, 2008–09
  • Co-Chair, 2006–08
  • Member, 2003–06 [Note: partially pre-tenure track]

accompanying materials

  • 7Cs official website (which I was partly responsible, with Michael Day and a group of Task Force members, for revising)
