The New Leadership Board (NLB) is an advisory group of people ages 17-39 who work with the Economic Development Council leadership to establish an additional set of priorities for the economic future of the Bloomington-Normal area. The goal is to create a generational dialogue and provide ongoing input to the area’s business, economic and political leadership regarding these emerging generations’ concerns, bringing a voice to this untapped resource. Split into four half-day sessions, NLB members researched and wrote white papers on the following topics:

• What is the future of the workplace?
• Who’s the boss?
• The Value of Technology
• Quality of Life

This subcommittee of the CELJ was tasked with writing a set of guidelines on best practices for electronic journal editors. I was one of three e-journal editors (of 12 editors) who served. I participated heavily in the writing and revision of the document, including changing early versions that addressed multiple audiences with incorrect information (i.e., trying to appeal to authors and administrators through an historical overview of the move from print to digital publishing; suggesting that publishing online was “quicker and cheaper” than print, which is not usually true, etc.). The sections that I worked on most closely include “Mission Statement, Submission Guidelines, and Timely Review,” “Style,” “Web Design,” “Accessibility,” “Availability,” and the reference list.

I was elected to serve on the Membership Committee of the university’s Graduate Council. This committee reviews departmental applications for newly hired faculty (or newly eligible faculty) to serve as graduate faculty. Members of the various committees on Graduate Council also vote on agenda items of relevance to the whole Council, such as (in the past) graduate student health insurance and stipend raises, curricular changes, etc.

On this university committee, I helped revise the application for the 2009-10 U-Club scholarship application and serve as a judge of these applications. During the 2008-09 year, the committee received around 70 applications, and we awarded 10 scholarships.

This committee is responsible for professional growth of the department, specifically in the areas of alumni networking, a speaker series, and outreach activities such as Homecoming events and end-of-semester parties. This year I have helped organize and served as a greeter at the department’s Homecoming tent and will plan the end-of-year reception.
